When planning the transportation process, it is important to take into account peak periods like the days before Christmas or the time of Black Friday promotions. The virus situation can lead to problems especially in companies that have a limited capacity of workforce or devices and equipment.
# 4 The incorrect and / or incomplete customs documentation of the cargo
In case of international transport the existence and flawless filling of the necessary documentation is essential. Otherwise there is no doubt the cargo will be delayed. This delay is further increased if the authorities decide to carry out an audit and examine the cargo. Compliance with strict customs regulations is essential, so it is very important to have a logistics partner with reliable, up-to-date knowledge.
# 5 Lack of clarity
Here you need to think about such annoying things as illegible handwriting on the waybill. If you know that this can cause complications, do not fill out the documentation by hand. Obviously, you also have to aim for the clarity of the shipping labels. For example, if the paper is damaged, it will make it difficult to read and/or interpret, and the shipment may be lost.
# 6 Using outdated technology
Old, outdated software and age-old hardware pose huge problems for transport companies. The simple reason is that older technologies limit the possibility of integrating new technologies or preventing the access to functions, which could reduce or eliminate shipping delays. Road and rail transport
Transport of goods by road: About 70% of (domestic) freight transport happens by road worldwide. The average carbon dioxide emissions of a fossil-fuelled lorry with an internal combustion engine is 0,1693 kg per ton-mile. This is a high number, therefore, cannot be classified as a sustainable alternative. It is important to note that delays due to traffic jams can increase this already high number even further. The use of electric vehicles for the transport of goods seems to be an obvious solution for which there is a growing interest from companies.
Rail freight transport: the average CO2 emissions of a freight train is 0,1048 kg per ton-mile, so it offers a more sustainable option to road transport. In addition, with regard to fuel and energy use it is four times more efficient as the aforementioned mode of transport. However, strong noise pollution is also a disadvantage in case of this mode of transport. The share of rail in global freight transport is around 15-20%.
Maritime and air transport
Transport of goods by sea: it has the lowest average carbon dioxide emission, which is 0,0403 kg per ton-miles but at the same time, there are other pollutants, greenhouse gases, the existence of which must also be taken into account. Although we are talking about one of the most cost-effective modes of transport, due to long transit time some companies often find it less attractive.
Air freight transport: 0,8063 kg of carbon dioxide per ton-mile, so air transport is not the most environmentally friendly way to deliver goods from A to B. For shorter distances, road or maritime transport may prove to be a better choice.
Multimodal logistics in focus
The combination of different transport options is often not only a more sustainable but also a more efficient alternative. There is no need to deal with multiple transshipment and complex administration, since the goods are in the same transport unit (e.g. containers, lorries, trailers). The backbone of multimodal (Combined) solutions is rail transport and shipping.
The aim is primarily to reduce road transport distances and to replace air transport with heavy environmental loads. It is no coincidence that the European Union called it its mission that by 2030, 30% of road freight transport of more than 300 kilometres need to be done by rail and/or shipping. However, the problem is that 90% of the domestic trailers and semi-trailers are not suitable for cranage. The French Lohr system offers a good solution for this. It is a railway wagon with a special design and a convertible interior.
The future of green, environmentally conscious logistics is clearly the development of combined transportation and the exploitation of its potentials. Combining different transport sectors can increase energy efficiency while making sustainability feasible.

In choosing the ideal mode of transport, the most important factors are time and budget. If speed is less relevant, maritime transport may prove to be a good idea, as it is a cost-effective form of transport. In containers, goods of any type can be loaded. In case of Higher volume / heavier shipments (e.g. machinery, passenger cars), this is the most logical decision. In terms of economic efficiency and sustainability, (see article on sustainability) maritime transport is far superior to other modes of transport… but only if you want to deliver large quantities from A to B or if the destination country is far away.
Risk factors of maritime transport
The movement and moving of goods
You have to take account of the fact that the vessel is heaving and surging on its way, especially if the weather conditions are not very favourable. In the course of maritime transport, there can be several occasions where transshipping of goods may be required. When lifting and moving the contents of the container with forklifts or portal cranes, they are subject to strong mechanical impacts. Therefore, sea packaging must be carefully planned! If there is too much free space or the cargo weight is distributed unevenly in the container, there may be unforeseen consequences!
Long transit time, unpredictability
Maritime transport is much slower than other modes of transport. It could take weeks for the goods to reach their destination. Tracking the shipment is cumbersome especially if routes and timetables need to be changed. “Better Late Than Never!” – This phrase in logistics, unfortunately, does not hold up under any circumstances. If the ship is delayed due to a major storm or overcrowding in the ports, it may result in additional costs (for example, due to extended storage times).
Because a lot of time goes by from the start of delivery to final delivery, it is even more important to use proper packaging.
Safe and resistant sea packaging – 5 simple tips
#1 When using consolidated containers you don’t know what cargo you’ll be sharing your space with. In such cases, it is particularly important to use strong (5 or 7 layers) cardboard boxes in perfect condition.
#2 In case of FCL transport weight should be evenly distributed on the floor. Make sure that the entire area of the container is covered.
#3 Correct packaging and labelling draws the attention of the handling staff to restrictions on cargo (e.g. no stacking).
#4 The packaging and space-filling, padding materials must be moisture resistant.
#5 A good solution for stable support of the shipment is the inflatable dunnage bag, which eliminates empty spaces.

The transport of goods by road has been almost completely impossible in recent weeks, and it will probably get even worse later.
Fuel prices are skyrocketing
The reason for the incredibly high petrol price of HUF 500 and above is primarily due to the increase in demand after the pandemic, the drastic weakening of the Hungarian Forint and the global increase in energy prices. The latter can be explained by the need for a lot of energy to refine gasoline. As of 15 November, the government decided to put an end to this rise however, the fixed maximum price of HUF 480 applies only for the next 3 months and only for specific types (95 petrol and diesel).
RECENT UPDATE –There is a restriction in force from 30 July 2022 that only privately owned vehicles can be refueled at the discounted official price. This means that carriers have to calculate with gasoline prices at around HUF 700 per liter.
We are almost out of AdBlue additive
AdBlue is an important additive for newer diesel cars with SCR systems and trucks. Without it, it is impossible to meet the requirements for low emission levels. If the tank is empty, the electronics will be disabled after a while, and the vehicle simply does not start. Due to the European energy crisis or the 70% increase of the world market price for natural gas the manufacturers have switched to “saving mode” and AdBlue has become a niche. This is mainly a problem in (foreign) freight transport where frequent filling of the additive is required.
RECENT UPDATE – although the situation seemed to be resolved for a while, AdBlue shortage is expected to reoccur in autumn 2022. The main reason for this is that due to the high gas prices, the Slovakian chemical company Duslo Sala plans a temporary shutdown in manufacturing, which would endanger the supply of the entire region.
More and more drivers are missing
In spite of the high wage, trucking is an unattractive profession for the current youth. Tivadar Árvay, spokesperson of Hungarian Road Transport Association said in an interview he gave to Portfolio: Currently there are about 130 thousand drivers working in Hungary, most of them representing the age group of 40 and 50. They will retire early but there is no one to replace them. In addition, many people go abroad, especially to Great Britain, where there is a serious driver shortage so extremely high wages can be expected in this field.
The future of international transport: rail freight transport
The main advantage of rail freight transport over road transport is that wagons can transport higher quantities to bigger distances. Rail transport is fast and reliable, the least affected by weather conditions and traffic jams. Trains burn substantially less fuel per ton-mile than trucks, thus offering a more economical and at the same time more environmentally friendly alternative.
There is no need for an additive or a private driver to deliver the goods from A to B.
International rail freight transport (combined with shipping)
It’s no coincidence that there is a growing tendency for switching to multimodal transport solutions (LINK: MULTIMODAL) worldwide – the main reason for this is that the advantages of different modes of transport can be combined without the need for excess management. Combining rail and river (short sea) transport is currently the cheapest International method of transporting goods. Containers can be seamlessly transferred to the ferry without the need for multiple loading and unloading.

Cardboard box
Even if there is no visible damage to the box, it is not recommended to reuse it. External factors such as moisture or high humidity reduce the tensile strength of the packaging material. In order to guarantee absolute safety it is advisable to use light filling materials, for example bubble wrap. During the preparation of your cargo for transport, use only as much material as necessary to fill the box and to the optimal protection of the shipment!
Wooden crate
Wood packaging material – due to the risk of fire – should always have a plus protective layer, which also increases wear resistance. With their help, you can easily transport heavy machinery. Wooden crates are available in both standard and custom sizes.

Air cargo pallets
It is important that pallets undergo the appropriate heat treatment and are fitted with the official IPPC stamp! A EUR pallet can weigh up to 25 kg so during this type of transport custom-sized and constructed palettes might be better options.

What’s Incoterms?
The International Chamber of Commerce – ICC was founded in 1919 with the aim of making business clearer and more predictable, fully representing the interests of businesses. The different practices and legal interpretations of traders worldwide made it necessary to lay down common rules and directives. Therefore, the ICC in 1936, has decided to establish uniform standards that can easily be applied in international trade.
A universal foreign trade standard that applies throughout the world…
Incoterms (longer known as International Commercial Terms) is a so-called foreign trade standard, which is included in the transport contract and regulates the rights of the seller and buyer, and their obligations. So it determines how the goods purchased go from the seller to the buyer. A huge advantage is that there’s no need to discuss delivery terms for too long in the contract, just refer to the appropriate Incoterms clause. It does not matter if your trading partner is in Alaska or Uzbekistan as these global guidelines are known and accepted everywhere.
The collection includes 11 conditions, stated in 3 letter abbreviations. The rules are classified in 4 categories, to groups ‘E’, ‘F’, ‘ C ‘ and ‘ D ‘. By means of transport, clauses may apply to sea/inland waterway or for multimodal transport forms.
The new, sixth version took effect on 01.01.2020
Incoterms is renewed every 10 years in order to fully adapt to current business practices. The sixth version was issued this January.

Some important changes compared to 2010:
- DPU, instead of DAT – Specifies that in addition to the terminal, other locations may be used for the delivery of the goods.
- FCA – The bill of lading is issued after loading.
- Safety obligations get an even bigger emphasis.

#1 EXV – Ex-Works: Almost all costs and risks are borne by the buyer. The seller has essentially the task of making the goods available to the buyer within the contractual period, properly packaged and transported.
#2 DAP – Delivered at Place: The seller shall fulfil his obligation if he makes the goods available to the buyer at the named place of destination, ready for unloading.
#3 DDP – Delivered Duty Paid: The seller shall be obliged to deliver the goods to the destination and shall bear the related costs and risks, including payment of customs duties.
#4 FCA-free Carrier – Delivered Free of Charge to the Carrier: Delivery of goods to the carrier of the buyer is the duty of the seller. The place for unloading can be of several types. If this place belongs to the seller, the goods are actually delivered when they are loaded onto the means of transport provided by the buyer. If this place is not in the possession of the seller: delivery is considered to be completed when loading on the means of transport, which is ready to unload the goods at the designated place. In this case, an additional condition is the presence of a responsible person appointed by the buyer or seller.

#1 INFORMATION: Be up to date regarding your logistics supply chain.
With the fast growth of e-commerce in the last decade, air transport has become a key element in the logistics supply chain for many companies and organisations. You should know that this type of transport (just like other types) only works smoothly if you are fully informed about certain influential factors and circumstances. We recommend that you keep yourself informed of local holidays and public holidays in the regions you are shipping to.
Take China, for example, because it is an important country for many of our clients.
Even if you are in daily contact with China, it is easy to forget when their cultural celebrations or peak logistical periods begin and end. #2 PLANNING: Make sure you plan your air transport in time.
Once you are aware of all the important information, you should also know how to use this information if you want to avoid certain additional, unnecessary costs or annoying delays.
This may sound complicated at first, but it really isn’t! If you are familiar with the dates of the scheduled air transport, simply compare them with the information available to you and then modify the schedule to allow for any possible delays.
Make sure you don’t leave this for the last minute! It is usually a good starting point to book air transport shipments at least two weeks in advance. Unfortunately, there are peak seasons when you should expect a higher demand, when transport prices can also be higher. It is possible, that if you want a guaranteed space on a given day, it will mean extra cost.
