Obstructed traffic? Trouble at customs or at the port? Human negligence? These can all lead to cargo delays. If you want satisfied partners and customers, it is important to minimize the possibility of delays.

The post What are the reasons of cargo delays? Here are the 7 most common causes first appeared on Strapa-Pack Packaging Ltd..

A delayed cargo can be very annoying. If the customer or partner does not receive the ordered goods on time, the trust in the company suffers a huge loss. What could be behind these delays? We have identified the most common causes and possible solutions.

# 1 Slow and difficult traffic

Road closures due to construction work or unexpected accidents can significantly extend transportation time. In order for the shipment to arrive as soon as possible, drivers often use route optimization software. The essence of such programs is to show the best routes that can save time and cost. In order to avoid delays and other disruptions, data is updated in real time.

# 2 congestion in the port or terminal

This usually happens when a huge number of containers arrive at the port, exceeding the specified maximum. This is especially characteristic of transshipment ports, where the turnover of transit cargoes is much higher than import-export. The ship is further forced to wait with the start of operations until the work on previous cargoes is over.

>> Looking for help with maritime transport? Look no further! <<

# 3 Peak periods, strikes and COVID

When planning the transportation process, it is important to take into account peak periods like the days before Christmas or the time of Black Friday promotions. In some countries, strikes can also cause delays (see 2021″ green card strike “in Italy). The virus situation can lead to problems especially in companies that have a limited capacity of workforce or devices and equipment.

# 4 The incorrect and / or incomplete customs documentation of the cargo

In case of international transport the existence and flawless filling of the necessary documentation is essential. Otherwise there is no doubt the cargo will be delayed. This delay is further increased if the authorities decide to carry out an audit and examine the cargo. Compliance with strict customs regulations is essential, so it is very important to have a logistics partner with reliable, up-to-date knowledge.

# 5 Lack of clarity

Here you need to think about such annoying things as illegible handwriting on the waybill. If you know that this can cause complications, do not fill out the documentation by hand. Obviously, you also have to aim for the clarity of the shipping labels. For example, if the paper is damaged, it will make it difficult to read and/or interpret, and the shipment may be lost.

# 6 Using outdated technology

Old, outdated software and age-old hardware pose huge problems for transport companies. The simple reason is that older technologies limit the possibility of integrating new technologies or preventing the access to functions, which could reduce or eliminate shipping delays. That is why, in order to better track shipments, traders are advised to invest into the latest hardware and cloud software. In addition to real-time data, the latter ensures contact between different actors in the supply chain.

# 7 Shortcomings in the necessary tools, equipment

It may happen that even the transportation of the goods from the warehouse is a serious challenge. This is extremely true if you need intermodal transport including road and rail transport. There may be a case where containers are not availablewhich can also lead to delays.

Do you consider the safety of your cargo essential?

Do you have to meet specific requirements such as the strict regulations for transporting dangerous goods?

Maritime transport is a cheap and popular form of transportation. Ports serve as important hubs, facilitating the delivery of goods from A to B on a global scale. Their economic importance is indisputable, since the higher the annual traffic of goods and passengers, the more developed infrastructure and related services are needed. Which are the biggest / busiest ports?

Europe

Out of the 28 EU member states, 23 have commercial seaports. The Port of Hamburg is an important hub for goods trafficking since the 12th century. Container Termial Burchardkai was expanded in 2019 with two more tracks, and the number of container cranes increased from two to four – thanks to the investment it can handle 850 000 TEU yearly.

Other important ports in Europe: Rotterdam (Netherlands), Antwerp (Belgium), Le Havre (France), Trieste (Italy), Felixstowe (England), Algeciras and Valencia (Spain).

Asia

This large continent is home to the world’s largest and busiest seaports. Since 2010, the Port of Sanghai has the largest turnover of goods (42 million TEU in 2018). Managing 1/7 of the world’s total shipping container cargo, the Port of Singapore is also huge and has connections to around 120 ports in 600 countries.

Other important ports in Asia: Laem Chabang (Thailand), Busan (South Korea), Hong Kong (China), Shenzhen (China), Tokyo (Japan), Port Klang (Malaysia).

North America

North America’s largest port is located in Los Angeles and it covers 7,500 hectares and handles 20% of all cargo arriving in the US. If we consider the volume of foreign waterborne cargo, Houston Harbor is the busiest in America. The 32 km long port has more than 200 public and private terminals.

More significant ports in North America: Long Beach (California), New York and New Jersey (East Coast), Seattle-Tacoma (Washington).

South America

146 million tonnes of cargo passes through the Port of Itagui of the Brazilian city of Sao Luis yearly. Over the past few years, the volume of containers has doubled and the number of tonnes handled has tripled. Since 2006, Port of Santos has been the busiest (and most modern) port in Latin America. Almost 50% of Brazil’s foreign trade is conducted here. Until World War II, coffee was the largest export.

Other significant ports in South America: Columbus (Panama), Balboa (Panama), Cartagena (Colombia), Montevideo (Uruguay), Manzanillo (Mexico).

Africa

Nearly 1,000 ships use the South African Port of Durban every month, and thanks to continuous improvements, this number is growing every year. If you look at the number of containers, at the moment the Moroccan Tanger Med is considered the busiest port in Africa (3.4 million containers in 2018).

Other important ports in Africa: Richards Bay (KwaZulu-Natal), Mombasa (Kenya), Port Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania), Beira (Mozambique).

Australia

Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Australia is a country of paramount importance in terms of international maritime transport. Port Hedland is the largest container port in Australia and Oceania, it is responsible for handling approximately 452 million tons of cargo annually. In terms of size and turnover the Port of Botany (Sydney) comes third, which is one of the most beautiful natural ports in the world.

Other significant ports in Australia: Brisbane (Queensland), Fremantle (Western Australia), Port Melbourne (Victoria), Darvin (Northern Australia).

Worried about mist, rust and mold generated during maritime transport?

Request sea-safe packaging for your shipment!

Carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, space utilisation and noise levels. These are the factors that most affect how each mode of transport promotes sustainable development. Transport of goods by road, rail, sea or air – which is the most environmentally friendly alternative? What do we mean by multimodal (combined) transport?

The post Environmentally conscious freight transport: Multimodal logistics in focus first appeared on Strapa-Pack Packaging Ltd..

In recent decades, under-considered transport solutions have unfortunately made a significant contribution to climate change and to the drastic deterioration of the state of the environment. Now, in the 21st century companies should be responsible for reducing their carbon footprint. One of the tools is the environmentally conscious delivery of goods. We’ll take a look at the options and help you choose the right one.

>> Something else you can do for the environment – learn the importance of size-optimized packaging. <<

Road and rail transport

Transport of goods by road: About 70% of (domestic) freight transport happens by road worldwide. The average carbon dioxide emissions of a fossil-fuelled lorry with an internal combustion engine is 0,1693 kg per ton-mile. This is a high number, therefore, cannot be classified as a sustainable alternative. It is important to note that delays due to traffic jams can increase this already high number even further. The use of electric vehicles for the transport of goods seems to be an obvious solution for which there is a growing interest from companies.

Rail freight transport: the average CO2 emissions of a freight train is 0,1048 kg per ton-mile, so it offers a more sustainable option to road transport. In addition, with regard to fuel and energy use it is four times more efficient as the aforementioned mode of transport. However, strong noise pollution is also a disadvantage in case of this mode of transport. The share of rail in global freight transport is around 15-20%.

Maritime and air transport

Transport of goods by sea: it has the lowest average carbon dioxide emission, which is 0,0403 kg per ton-miles but at the same time, there are other pollutants, greenhouse gases, the existence of which must also be taken into account. Although we are talking about one of the most cost-effective modes of transport, due to long transit time some companies often find it less attractive.

Air freight transport: 0,8063 kg of carbon dioxide per ton-mile, so air transport is not the most environmentally friendly way to deliver goods from A to B. For shorter distances, road or maritime transport may prove to be a better choice.

Multimodal logistics in focus

The combination of different transport options is often not only a more sustainable but also a more efficient alternative. There is no need to deal with multiple transshipment and complex administration, since the goods are in the same transport unit (e.g. containers, lorries, trailers). The backbone of multimodal (Combined) solutions is rail transport and shipping.

The aim is primarily to reduce road transport distances and to replace air transport with heavy environmental loads. It is no coincidence that the European Union called it its mission that by 2030, 30% of road freight transport of more than 300 kilometres need to be done by rail and/or shipping. However, the problem is that 90% of the domestic trailers and semi-trailers are not suitable for cranage. The French Lohr system offers a good solution for this. It is a railway wagon with a special design and a convertible interior.

The future of green, environmentally conscious logistics is clearly the development of combined transportation and the exploitation of its potentials. Combining different transport sectors can increase energy efficiency while making sustainability feasible.

Maritime transport is one of the most cost-effective forms of transport - if long delivery time is not a problem, it is an excellent solution. However, special care must be taken with regard to packaging, as the goods can easily move or be damaged by high humidity in a short period of time. If you know the most common risk factors and are properly prepared for them, you won't face any unexpected annoyance.

The post Importance of sea packaging – What are the risk factors? first appeared on Strapa-Pack Packaging Ltd..

We have already mentioned the dangers of extreme high humidity (see article on container rain). However, this is not the only risk factor to be taken into account if you choose the cost-effective maritime transport. Probably the last thing you want is to be unable to file a claim for damages due to improper packaging. The basic requirement of sea packaging is to guarantee protection even against external mechanical impacts.

In which cases should you choose the popular maritime transport?

In choosing the ideal mode of transport, the most important factors are time and budget. If speed is less relevant, maritime transport may prove to be a good idea, as it is a cost-effective form of transport. In containers, goods of any type can be loaded. In case of Higher volume / heavier shipments (e.g. machinery, passenger cars), this is the most logical decision. In terms of economic efficiency and sustainability, (see article on sustainability) maritime transport is far superior to other modes of transport… but only if you want to deliver large quantities from A to B or if the destination country is far away.

Risk factors of maritime transport

The movement and moving of goods

You have to take account of the fact that the vessel is heaving and surging on its way, especially if the weather conditions are not very favourable. In the course of maritime transport, there can be several occasions where transshipping of goods may be required. When lifting and moving the contents of the container with forklifts or portal cranes, they are subject to strong mechanical impacts. Therefore, sea packaging must be carefully planned! If there is too much free space or the cargo weight is distributed unevenly in the container, there may be unforeseen consequences!

Long transit time, unpredictability

Maritime transport is much slower than other modes of transport. It could take weeks for the goods to reach their destination. Tracking the shipment is cumbersome especially if routes and timetables need to be changed. “Better Late Than Never!” – This phrase in logistics, unfortunately, does not hold up under any circumstances. If the ship is delayed due to a major storm or overcrowding in the ports, it may result in additional costs (for example, due to extended storage times).

Because a lot of time goes by from the start of delivery to final delivery, it is even more important to use proper packaging.

Safe and resistant sea packaging – 5 simple tips

#1 When using consolidated containers you don’t know what cargo you’ll be sharing your space with. In such cases, it is particularly important to use strong (5 or 7 layers) cardboard boxes in perfect condition.

#2 In case of FCL transport weight should be evenly distributed on the floor. Make sure that the entire area of the container is covered.

#3 Correct packaging and labelling draws the attention of the handling staff to restrictions on cargo (e.g. no stacking).

#4 The packaging and space-filling, padding materials must be moisture resistant.

#5 A good solution for stable support of the shipment is the inflatable dunnage bag, which eliminates empty spaces.

Would you like to learn more about safe sea packaging?

Would you buy massive cardboard boxes and high-end space-filling materials?

Do you need help to secure your cargo in containers?

Almost all types of goods can be transported in containers from clothing to high-value technical articles to machinery and hazardous waste. If the cargo inside the container is shaking, moving back and forth, it may pose a risk to both the handling staff and the safety of the cargo. The most common methods of securing are increasing friction, using support and lashing. In order to find the right technique, a number of factors must be taken into account. For example, the nature of the goods, the packaging used and the transport vehicle.

The post Guidelines for load securing during transport first appeared on Strapa-Pack Packaging Ltd..

Globalization and the expansion of e-commerce have provided companies with a lot of great opportunities. However, they also have to face a number of challenges, as they have to transport their products safely to faraway places, anywhere in the world.

The importance of load securing should not be undermined! This highly important step serves a dual purpose: for one thing, accidents can be avoided and another important result is that the goods will arrive to the end customer in flawless condition. It can guarantee you that everything will go by the book.

As a zero step, you must also check the loading of the container!

Factors affecting appropriate load securing

If you study The European best practices guidelines on cargo securing for road transport, you can read about many factors, which can affect the safety of your cargo during the distribution cycle:

The vehicle: you have to ensure that the vehicle is really suitable for transporting your cargo, and if it is needed, you have to make sure that it is fitted with items necessary for securing the load (such as side/front/back doors), battens, stanchions or anchoring points inside the vehicle)

Packaging: Without choosing the right packaging, there is no such thing as safe transport. In order to guarantee adequate load securing the best tertiary packaging method should be determined, which can consist of pallets, sheets between cargo layers, edge protectors, web lashing, shrink wrap or boxes. It is also very important to carry out simulation tests, which can certify the resistance of a package to the risks of transport.

Securing elements, such as:

– lashes, chains,

– steel cables,

– load bars or dunnage,

– methods to increase the friction between the load and the platform

(for example coatings, mats or anti-slip sheets).

In order to achieve faultless load securing it is advisable to analyse which of these above-mentioned solutions are the most ideal for the type of goods being transported, also considering the vehicle and the route.

Securing methods: if the cargo breaks loose, it can cause serious damage! The different types of securing elements (locking, blocking, direct lashing or top over lashing) are to prevent your load from moving during transportation.

Load securing: why is it essential?

Transportation cost efficiency

According to the report of Packworld, the cost of replacing the damaged product during the distribution cycle can be as high as 17 times the cost of transport. The adequate load securing method not only means less waste caused by damaged products, but it can also strengthen brand reputation if the end user receives the products in perfect condition (which can result in more returning customers)

Avoiding accidents

Damaged products and personal injuries…. Things we all want to avoid!

According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work inadequate load securing is to be blamed for 25% of the accidents related to trucks. This is a very high rate..

Complying with regulations

There are a number of regulations on the stability of load during transport such as the 2014/47/EU directive, which mentions the EUMOS 40509 testing method applicable in Europe. Analyzing the load securing as well as using testing equipment can guarantee the benefits of complying with these international transportation regulations and standards.

Optimizing the packaging

Monitoring the stability of the load means that when choosing the packaging method it is also important to consider those real hazards, which can jeopardize the goods during the distribution cycle. Besides the protection of goods, packaging becomes easier to design, which helps us to avoid unnecessary costs due to over-packaging.

Environmental factors

Studying the load securing results in safer solutions, which require less waste and smaller amounts of energy for transportation, manufacturing and packaging.

It is necessary to verify the condition of the container (structural stability/damage), the quantity and quality of the goods and whether the packaging has been carried out professionally and carefully. The inspecting person shall also check that the container is properly sealed and that the necessary documentation is available. A full-scale inspection will allow everything to go as planned leaving no chance for any mistakes. The process may also help to clarify the liability of both the exporter and the transporter.

The post An important step which you can’t leave out as an exporter: inspecting container loading first appeared on Strapa-Pack Packaging Ltd..

Customer confidence should not be taken lightly! The main purpose of each exporter is to ensure that the customer is satisfied when the goods are received and that the goods arrive in perfect condition, in the quantities ordered.

However, many things can go wrong during the loading process or during transport.

This article will tell you what steps you should take and how to make sure the goods are definitely ready for transport

Why choose container transportation?

Containers are suitable for transporting a wide variety of goods. Their size and design are standardized, so they can be handled uniformly anywhere in the world. Transporting bulk goods in containers can be up to 10-20x cheaper compared to conventional solutions.

A container is essentially a private warehouse that protects the cargo inside it. Therefore, in many cases, you can also save significant amounts on packaging costs.

What happens during container loading inspection?

If you are transporting goods abroad and want everything to go smoothly, you must not leave out the inspection. It helps to prevent improper handling or damage to goods during transport.

IMPORTANT: don’t forget about safe load securing!

Container loading is typically inspected at the consignor’s factory or warehouse and includes the followings:

Quantitative and qualitative inspection

The customer is right to be annoyed if they bought 1000 technical equipment from you, but only 900 has arrived and there is another 100 they can’t sell because they were damaged during transport. At this stage, the inspector shall ensure that this does not happen.

Inspecting the packaging of goods

If the wrong packaging has been selected, if the packaging is torn, damaged, and the labels are incorrect, it can cause a lot of headaches.

Inspection of the loading process, containers and vehicles

The inspector shall supervise the loading of the goods to ensure that nothing is damaged during the process.

The condition of containers and vehicles must also be inspected: if an error occurs, such as containers are not properly sealed, safe transport cannot be guaranteed.

Recording loading conditions and making a report

The inspector shall record the loading conditions in order to minimise possible road problems. Upon completion of the entire inspection process, the importer shall receive a detailed report with photographs and information.

Container loading inspection: whose priority is it?

Container loading inspection is useful for all importers who consider the safe loading, transport and arrival of their products to their destination important.

It can be especially crucial for those who:

have just started a business like this, and want everything to go smoothly during the transport process.

ship fragile goods that require more complex or detailed loading criteria.

What are the benefits of container loading inspections?

Inspection of container loading reduces the possibility for the customer to have an unpleasant surprise when the goods arrive to almost zero.

It allows you to be informed of the state of the goods before shipping, to detect possible problems and to take immediate action. If there is any discrepancy, the staff responsible shall decide on the next step.

On the other hand, the presence of professionals during the container loading process almost entirely eliminates the risk of improper handling and loading of goods and minimises the risk of theft and other unexpected problems.

To sum up:

with the supervision of the container loading process you have to worry less about possible damage to the goods or suffering financial losses and you have more time to focus on your business and your customers.

And if you want to make sure that your cargo is safely secured inside the container: just leave it to Strapa-Pack!

In this article, we are presenting 4 products that may not be as well-known as the corrugated cardboard box or the adhesive tape, yet they are of great help and can guarantee safety in all modes of transport. Shock indicators, dunnage bags, intercept films and bentonite…

Have you heard of them? If you haven’t, it’s high time you got to know our special packaging materials!

Indicators, i.e. transport control tools

We use different indicators, i.e. transport control tools to prevent damage to cargo, which can detect all shipping irregularities during the journey of the package. Our wide range of products allow us to offer our partners the best solution. Stockwatches, tiltwatches, humidity and temperature indicators significantly reduce the risk of shipping damage. Indicators make it possible to determine the place and time of the shipping damage and draw attention to careful and responsible handling of goods.

Special materials for container securing

Our Company undertakes to secure packages and goods in containers in a professional manner in order to avoid any shipping damage. For this, we use special techniques and tools such as fastening straps, wedging or the above mentioned dunnage bags. Our popular product, the inflatable dunnage bag, works very simply: it fills the gaps between the cargos and stabilises and supports the shipment. It provides maximum protection against shocks and jolts in case of all modes of transport.

Foils and films for a wide variety of packaging requirements

In the product range of Strapa-Pack you can find almost all types of foils and films: for example, traditional stretch film for hand and machine packaging, custom-sized PE film or laminated film (associated). Our intercept and fibre reinforced, and our VCI foils provide extra protection against corrosion during maritime transport. Air bubble films, antistatic air bubble films, shrink and foam films are also available for order. We also customize and process foil!

Vapour barriers in an environmentally friendly design (bentonite)

High humidity is a problem that is most likely to be encountered during maritime transport. Therefore, it is essential to use vapour barriers, since without them corrosion and precipitated salt can lead to an inoperable or unusable product or machine. The eco-friendly bentonite desiccant bags absorb moisture and provide high protection against external environmental impacts. They are essential for the transport of technical and industrial products.

Our company, Strapa-Pack Ltd. sells high-quality packaging materials made with modern technology. From our wide range, we will help you choose the products that will provide the most effective solution to your packaging problems.

Maritime transport is one of the most popular and cheapest forms of transport where we face many challenges. Heat and humid air are responsible for the formation of container rain. Unfortunately, containers do not lock airtight; there is always some moisture in them. A sudden change in temperature could result in condensation dripping down from the side of the tank and from the ceiling, causing serious damage to the shipment. Fortunately, there is a solution.…

Container rain – warm, humid air can cause serious damage to your cargo. We’ll tell you what to do against it!

Surprising data: about 10% of the containerised goods end up as waste because moisture and humidity damage the cargo. This is a gigantic amount of waste, which not only means large economic losses, but also has a negative impact on the environment. What causes container rain? And a more pressing question if we think of our customers: How do we stop it from happening? In this article, we will try to answer these questions and give some practical advice on how to prevent such disaster.

It is very important to protect against moisture inside the container.

It goes without saying that it’s very expensive in the long run to say goodbye to 10% of your consignment.

If it’s a single shipment, it may not be the end of the world, but if we’re looking at a whole year – or a decade – then we’re talking about a massive financial loss. If we could sell this discarded 10%, it would greatly increase our profits. If the products have become completely damaged by moisture and fungus, you must discard everything and deliver the goods to the customer again. In addition, if it is an urgent shipment, you may even have to choose the much more expensive air transport rather than sea transport. In addition to economic losses and excess waste, cargo damage can often result in a loss of revenue and, for almost all segments and products, could jeopardise the credibility of manufacturers or retailers, thereby undermining confidence towards them.

What causes container rain?

Container rain is caused by a change in temperature, which may occur when vessels pass through different climate zones. Let us look at a simple example: the container is loaded in Hong Kong, where, thanks to the tropical climate, the air is known to be warm and wet. If the cargo then ends up in the cold Scandinavia and the container is not sufficiently protected from moisture, damage to your cargo can be guaranteed.

When vessels cross the Suez Canal between South Asia and Europe, the temperature of the container can reach up to 80 degrees Celsius! Inside the container, the warm, humid air condenses, which can have negative consequences. Like dewdrops forming on a cold soda can on a hot summer day, condensation begins to form on the surface of the cargo, on the inner ceiling and on the walls of the container. Condensation occurs on the coldest surface available, and when the warmer air hits a colder surface (the container sealing), moisture release may be as significant as if it was rain falling from the ceiling. Interesting fact: the container floor by itself can hold up to one hectolitre (100 litres) of water!

This may happen every day until the relative humidity (Rh%) is reduced. Mystery solved: when the container arrives and you find that everything is soaked, wet and mouldy, this is almost certainly, what has happened!

Moisture and fungus? Follow these tips!

Although temperature fluctuations are impossible to prevent, there are some tips you can follow to avoid container rain. In general, each container holds a certain amount of moisture:

On the one hand, air always has a basic water content (hot air more than cold), and high fiber cargo, such as furniture, handicrafts and agricultural products, clothing and other fabrics, all contain a certain amount of moisture.

Another surprising fact is that moisture can occur naturally in the packaging material itself (for example, pallets, crates, cardboard boxes). Therefore, when shipping containers overseas, you should consider both the materials of the goods and the packaging and care should be taken to select the suitable packing material for your cargo.

Adequate ventilation also plays an important role in ensuring that moisture does not transform into container rain It is a common mistake to cover the container’s ventilation, thinking that moisture enters from outside. This is a huge misconception – ventilation is designed to remove excessive moisture! Covering it only makes it worse, because as the humid air inside will get hotter and which will result in more container rain

Another very simple way to have less moisture inside the container if the pallets are not standing outside. It is important to know: wood absorbs moisture, especially when the air is warm and humid. Standard EU pallets can absorb up to 20 litres of water and a standard size container contains about 40 pallets. After a quick calculation it is easy to see how this huge amounts of water can generate inside the container – 800 liters is almost as much as two full baths! The price of LCL transport is usually set in kilograms and cubic metres. This means that if your cargo has excess weight, you will pay for nothing. Just by paying attention to these “tiny” details, you can reduce the likelihood of container rain and protect your product from moisture and fungus.

The best method is using dehumidifier

If you are transporting expensive, fragile goods, or if there are many factors that make container rain highly probable, using dehumidifier is of paramount importance. It helps to prevent moisture in the air from reaching a drastic level that can cause damage. This is done by calcium chloride-based absorbing bags, which in its natural state is a liquid brine that is converted into dry matter by the removal of water by heating. If it gets into contact with air, it rapidly and automatically absorbs water from the surrounding air to regain its natural state. So you don’t have to worry, feel free to close the container and open it weeks later, the goods will still be in perfect condition.

Bentonite is also an effective vapor barrier. Its main component is calcium montmorillonite, which is an extremely strong adsorbent that can bind many times its own volume. This natural clay mineral is completely harmless to living organisms and offers an environmentally friendly alternative. Due to its beneficial properties, it is used in many fields such as in electronics, logistics, food and pharmaceutical industries, etc.

Are you also worried about container rain? Would you like to keep your shipment safe?

Green logistics aims to reduce the environmental impact of transport tasks, the importance of which is increasingly recognised not only by large multinationals but also by retailers, suppliers and consumers. You don't need to worry – taking sustainability into account is not the same as deciding on outdated, less effective solutions that do not serve your economic interests. If you are aware of your options, you can simply reduce your company's carbon footprint without having to make any more serious sacrifices.

The post Sustainability of the supply chain – Think Green! first appeared on Strapa-Pack Packaging Ltd..

Decisions of a company regarding its supply chain have a serious impact on the environment. All responsible executives must consider this. Making more sustainable choices is much easier when you see the facts clearly. This article’s goal is to help you with this!

Transportation is an essential part of our society and we must improve it together.

The need to reduce their ecological footprint puts pressure on companies in all sectors (this is particularly true for transportation and logistics). Fortunately, green thinking is becoming more widespread, and some even reduce the overall flow of goods by rethinking how and where they manufacture their products.

Transportation is the basis of all economies, one of the central and most essential elements of our society. In order to protect our environment, it is inevitable that we develop and implement new, more sustainable transportation methods. It is therefore essential that sectors highly dependent on transportation re-evaluate their methods and try to make choices that are even more responsible. Don’t worry, in this article we we’ll give you some tips how to do it!

Study and consider your options and the consequences of your actions!

Of course, in order to be able to plan more consciously, you will need to gather all the necessary information. It is important that you are aware of your own needs, market limits and deadlines. If this is done, consider all the available alternatives and think about the impact of each decision you are about to make on your business and on the environment.

To put it more simply: identify, prioritize and keep reevaluating things!

Here are some simple tips:

Optimizing – do not transport unnecessarily! Increase the utilisation of your vehicles’ capacity, opt for the most appropriate modes of transport for each phase and maximise the potentials of logistical planning.

Modal shifts-switch to more environmentally friendly transportation modes and new multimodal combinations.

Technological development & cooperation-The mutual efforts and cooperation of companies lead to innovations such as biofuels and more efficient transportation modes, which ultimately reduce their combined environmental impact and prevent climate change.

More sustainable and more economical modes of transporting goods

Maritime transport at shorter distances– maritime transport at shorter distances is a practical way to reduce CO₂ emissions and save money.

Sustainable road transport -biofuels have lower CO₂ emissions; tracking technology contributes to a greater efficiency and sustainability.

Rail transport – if maritime transport is not an option, for example, due to time constraints, rail transport or the combination of rail and air transport is more sustainable than just air transport.

Multimodal solutions– by combining different modes of transportation you can find the most sustainable option for each stage of transport.

Less than container load (LCL) – combine your cargo with other shipments to deliver a full container load (FCL). This method is more convenient and cost-effective, not to mention the positive impact on the environment!

As a responsible packaging company, we work hard every day to minimize our carbon footprint.

Relative humidity above 50% may lead to moulding, rusting and even permanent inoperability of the product. There is almost no product category that should not be subject to increased protection from moisture during their transport and storage.

If you choose to transport items by sea you have to face such extreme levels of humidity during the long transit period which may cause to humidification and moulding.

If you wish to deliver valuable technical items worth thousands of EUR per piece to your customers and partners, the high moisture content of saline sea air may attack the sensitive parts which results in rusting. The easiest way to protect against humidity in the surrounding air is to use vapour barrier bags.

Sodium bentonite – Say good-bye to the mould and rust of the shipments.

The easiest way to protect your goods against humidity in the surrounding air is to use desiccant bags.

Sodium bentonite is a natural clay mineral that is formed by the deposition of volcanic ash. Due to its unique properties, it is perfect for blocking humidity.

Excellent dehumidifying ability

The most important feature of bentonite is that it has an exceptional water absorption capacity. We are talking about 100% natural solution that provides direct protection for your shipment while also absorbing unpleasant odors. With the help of this product, a safe, 10- 30% moisture level can be guaranteed inside the package.

A safe and environmentally friendly choice

The production of bentonite requires a small amount of energy and chemicals, compared to the frequently used synthetic silica gel, and therefore deserves the 100% eco-friendly title. It does not contain any excipients that are harmful to health. It is not flammable or water- soluble and can be safely used with food and medicinal products. It can be handled and fully recycled similar to household waste.

Economical use

In addition to their many great qualities, those desiccant bags that contain bentonite are also becoming more and more popular due to their reasonable price. They can be produced cheaper compared to silica gel and are therefore they are a much more economical alternative. They can be re-activated and re-used in an oven heated to 245 °C for 16 hours.

The desiccant bags are small and light and do not cause significant changes in the weight and shape of the cargo. This way, your transport costs won’t go through the roof.

Wide range of products for a wide variety of needs

Bentonite is also available in different pack sizes. The most popular are the 16 and 8 unit packs. The unit of desiccant (U = unit) refers to its drying capacity.

A unit can absorb at least 3 grams of water vapour at a relative humidity of 20%. You can also purchase our desiccant bags in additional versions.
