$ 46 billion … that’s what companies could save every year.
A global survey conducted among the leaders of 370 companies highlighted the importance of empty space management. Nearly a quarter of the sea containers are empty, because the majority of the products come in oversized packaging. More than one third (34%) of research participants acknowledged that their packages were at least twice the size of the actual product. Now why is this a big problem? It is estimated that getting rid of the empty space in the packaging could leave companies with around USD 46 billion more in their pocket each year. However, a large proportion (almost 70%) of companies do not deal with this problem.
Size-optimized packaging can save you significant amounts
Lighter, smaller packages have a lot more potential than you might think. The data is shocking: a quantity of containers corresponding to 61 million TEU (20 feet long transport unit) are delivered unnecessarily. Think about it: the more efficiently you package your products by optimizing the space and reducing the air in each package, the more goods can be loaded into, for example, a truck or container. Plus, you’re going to need less pallets and cardboard boxes. Consequently, the quantities delivered and the cost implications of storage and handling are also significantly reduced.

The emission of CO2 by transport vehicles puts an enormous pressure on our environment. Among other things, this type of gas is responsible for the greenhouse effect resulting in climate change (persistently higher temperatures). The amount of CO2 could be reduced globally by 122 million tons if more emphasis was given to optimal space utilisation. Another issue that needs to be taken into consideration is the waste generated during transport, which can also be reduced by rethinking packaging solutions. It is not only the primary and secondary packaging that should be considered: large quantities of paper and polystyrene used to fill the empty space are also harmful to the environment, which could be minimised if less space is left in a box. Road and rail transport
Transport of goods by road: About 70% of (domestic) freight transport happens by road worldwide. The average carbon dioxide emissions of a fossil-fuelled lorry with an internal combustion engine is 0,1693 kg per ton-mile. This is a high number, therefore, cannot be classified as a sustainable alternative. It is important to note that delays due to traffic jams can increase this already high number even further. The use of electric vehicles for the transport of goods seems to be an obvious solution for which there is a growing interest from companies.
Rail freight transport: the average CO2 emissions of a freight train is 0,1048 kg per ton-mile, so it offers a more sustainable option to road transport. In addition, with regard to fuel and energy use it is four times more efficient as the aforementioned mode of transport. However, strong noise pollution is also a disadvantage in case of this mode of transport. The share of rail in global freight transport is around 15-20%.
Maritime and air transport
Transport of goods by sea: it has the lowest average carbon dioxide emission, which is 0,0403 kg per ton-miles but at the same time, there are other pollutants, greenhouse gases, the existence of which must also be taken into account. Although we are talking about one of the most cost-effective modes of transport, due to long transit time some companies often find it less attractive.
Air freight transport: 0,8063 kg of carbon dioxide per ton-mile, so air transport is not the most environmentally friendly way to deliver goods from A to B. For shorter distances, road or maritime transport may prove to be a better choice.
Multimodal logistics in focus
The combination of different transport options is often not only a more sustainable but also a more efficient alternative. There is no need to deal with multiple transshipment and complex administration, since the goods are in the same transport unit (e.g. containers, lorries, trailers). The backbone of multimodal (Combined) solutions is rail transport and shipping.
The aim is primarily to reduce road transport distances and to replace air transport with heavy environmental loads. It is no coincidence that the European Union called it its mission that by 2030, 30% of road freight transport of more than 300 kilometres need to be done by rail and/or shipping. However, the problem is that 90% of the domestic trailers and semi-trailers are not suitable for cranage. The French Lohr system offers a good solution for this. It is a railway wagon with a special design and a convertible interior.

Road Transport is the most popular form of transport, which is mainly due to the fact that it allows the delivery of goods from door to door. According to the 2020 data of KSH, the share of road transport in tonne-kilometre is 61% in Hungary. In contrast, the share of rail freight is only 22%. However, the latter mode of transport also has a lot of advantages: for example, it is an extremely economical solution for longer distances and is less dependent on weather conditions.
Can the railway take over from the second half of 2022?
In principle, due to the brutally high petrol prices and the partial lifting of the petrol stop, it would be conceivable that in Hungary (and in countries affected by price increases) more emphasis will be placed on more environmentally friendly rail freight transport in the future. However, it is recommended to take into account the fact that from the fall of 2021 In Hungary, the price of traction energy also increased dramatically. Nevertheless, it is worth making a preliminary calculation and comparing the cost implications of the different modes of transport.
